[4] INTRO TO SEWING - WOVENS

Intro to Sewing: Wovens vs. Knits

Wovens vs. Knits – what’s the difference? Our Sewing Fundamentals training is now being taught as two distinct sections: Intro to Sewing Wovens and Intro to Sewing Knits. We’ll teach you what it means to sew with each of these types of fabrics and give you the skills to start creating! Whether you’re a home sewing enthusiast or an entrepreneur interested in starting your own line, these courses will guide you through the industry methods of sewing for fashion apparel.

Intro to Sewing: Wovens

Wovens are the most fundamental fabrics we work with, and there are a distinct set of skills needed to start working with them. In the Intro to Sewing Wovens section, we will guide you through the industry methods of sewing a basic woven drawstring pant using quality fashion fabrics.

In this class you will learn:

· How to set up a commercial sewing machine with the option to work on a commercial serger

· Troubleshooting your machine

· Basic sewing techniques for woven fabrics

· Pressing techniques

· Step-by-step instruction on sewing a pant including two types of pockets, topstitching, and hemming

This class is tailored to meet students at various skill levels and there are opportunities for more advanced techniques to be introduced if time allows. Students will be able to work at their own pace and will have individualized instruction throughout.

[5] INTRO TO PATTERN DRAFTING

Athleisure is here to stay, so why not learn how to create your very own pair of leggings? In this hands-on workshop, students will learn how to draft a leggings pattern from their own unique measurements. Students will leave this course with a customized pattern to be sewn up at home.

This workshop will cover:

  • How to take accurate measurements

  • Pattern drafting from individual measurements

  • Basic pattern corrections and alterations with examples

  • Techniques for sewing with knits

Materials: All tools and materials provided during the course.

[6] INTERMEDIATE SEWING

In this class students will build on the skills learned in Intro to Sewing and move on to more advanced techniques such as darts, gathers, facings and lapped zippers. Description: Intermediate SewingThe Project:We’ve created a dress that incorporates new skills to add to your sewing repertoire—a gathered skirt, neck facing, darts, notched cuffs, and lapped zipper. These skills will build confidence in your abilities and open up new possibilities for you to create projects at home. The skills we introduce in this class are:

  1. Darts: darts are important elements for proper fitting around the curves of the body, especially when working with woven fabrics

  2. Gathers: use gathers to create fullness in skirts, sleeves, bodices and other elements of a garment

  3. Facings: facings are used to create a smooth, seamless opening such as a neckline or pocket opening

  4. Lapped zippers: used as closures on pants, skirts, and dresses

  5. Notched cuff: this technique is used to create sharp corners and Vs and can be applied to many other design aspects of a garment

Learning outcomes:Students will gain an understanding of intermediate techniques which will enhance their ability to complete more complex projects on their own at home.  This course is designed to build on skills learned in Intro To Sewing and to increase confidence in students’ abilities on the machine. Designed, developed and taught by industry professionals, all of Sew Bromo’s courses are immersive, hands-on, intensive learning experiences. We’ve taken the most important aspects of traditional fashion school and condensed them into experiences accessible to professionals and students from all walks of life and at all stages of career development. We keep our classes small so we can accommodate students at all skill levels. Our mission is to give our students valuable knowledge in a format that fits with their busy lives and to create the next generation of mindful fashion entrepreneurs.

[7] INTRO TO SEWING - KNITS

Intro to Sewing: Knits

Hold your favorite t-shirt up to the light, look closely, and you will be able to see a series of loops—like very small scale knitting. This grants knit fabrics the unique properties that differentiate them from wovens. A notable feature of knits is their ability to stretch, making them ideal for activewear, swimwear, loungewear, and other garments designed for comfort and movement. In the Intro to Sewing Knits course, we will guide you through the industry methods of sewing a basic t-shirt.

In this class you will learn:

· How to set up a commercial sewing machine with the option to work on a commercial serger

· Basic sewing techniques for knit fabrics

· Pressing techniques

· Step-by-step instruction on t-shirt construction including placing a pocket, topstitching, inserting a ribbed neckband, and hemming

This class is tailored to meet students at various skill levels and there are opportunities for more advanced techniques to be introduced if time allows. Students will be able to work at their own pace and will have individualized instruction throughout.
